The Gladdest Thing

“I will be the gladdest thing
   Under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
   And not pick one.”

                -Edna St. Vincent Millay
                “Afternoon on a Hill”

When does a new friend become an old one?

When does the heart move from the fresh surprises of love newly found to the warm comfort of days spent together?

When do you start feeling more the gratitude of a friend’s constancy and faithfulness than the gratitude of finding him in the first place?

I couldn’t tell you the day, but I can show you the dog.
